SCC
Glen Dhu School Community Council

For information on what the SCC does within the Durham District School Board see the Durham District School Board Web site.

School Councils advise principals and, where appropriate, school boards on issues affecting the education programs and the operation of individual schools. Their membership reflects both the school and the community, and must include parents and guardians of students, the principal, a teacher, a student representative (secondary school councils), a non-teaching school staff member, as well as members from the community at large. Parents and guardians must make up the majority of council members.

  • School Councils may advise the principal or the school board on:

  • school year calendars;

  • codes of student behaviour;

  • curriculum priorities;

  • programs and strategies to improve school performance on provincial and school boards tests;

  • safe arrival programs (elementary schools);

  • communications to parents and communications to the community;

  • community use of the school, and community programs and services provided at the school through school-community partnerships;

  • school board policies that will affect the school; and

  • selection of principals.

COMMITTEES

Glen Dhu Public School is fortunate to have a very active school community. With hot lunch days, fundraising, etc., the School Community Council can always use an extra pair of hands.

You don't need to spend a lot of time at it, and we're not looking for experts. We just need people who want to pitch in for an afternoon, for some committee work, to sling burgers or to help 'organize' any number of events.

If you have some time to give to your school, why not take a look at the things we do and pick a project. Any member of the SCC would be happy to hear from you. Give us a call or drop a note in the SCC mailbox in Glen Dhu's office.

Kiss & Ride: Adult volunteers assist students who are being dropped off and picked up in Glen Dhu's 'Kiss and Ride' lane. A few minutes before school and at the end of the day

Fundraising: Glen Dhu currently concentrates it efforts on a few fundraising projects. Perhaps you can help out with one of these initiatives this year:

  • Cash donations: First introduced in Sept. 2002, the SCC offered parents an opportunity to make a charitable cash donation to the Durham District School Board, in trust for Glen Dhu. It's a great opportunity for parents to donate, 100 % goes straight to Glen Dhu, and opt out of purchasing fundraising goods they may not want or need.

  • Magazine sales: Started in 1996, this is a major fundraiser. Sales take place in late Sept. and early Oct. Volunteers are needed to co-ordinate the project and to help out for an hour each morning during the campaign period.

  • Lunch Days: The SCC's other big fundraiser. A few hours once a month to help co-ordinate orders and distribute lunches.

  • Campbell's Canada Labels for Education: A label collection program which last year saw Glen Dhu families collect more than 20,000 labels which will be redeemed for products to be used at Glen Dhu.

  • Glen Dhu Day with the Oshawa Generals: New in 2001/02, hundreds of Glen Dhuers turned out for two Oshawa Generals games. On Dec. 15, 2002 we held our third Glen Dhu Day with the Oshawa Generals, with more than 300 Glen Dhuers in attendance -- the choir opened the game with the national anthem. A fun way to raise funds for Glen Dhu and show some great school spirit! This continues to be an on-going fund raiser and fun night for all!

Campbell's Labels for Education

What is Campbell's Canada Labels for Education?

Labels for Education is a program sponsored by Campbell Soup Company Ltd. The Program offers schools the opportunity to redeem labels and other proofs of purchase from Campbell's family of quality products in exchange for FREE educational resources and equipment.

How is Labels for Education Different From Other Fund-Raising Programs? Labels for Education was created to provide an alternative to traditional fund-raising. The Program is designed to operate without any door-to-door selling, product control, delivery problems or cash transactions. It's basically a simple label collection project that's easy to start, coordinate and successfully complete.

How can Glen Dhu families help?

You can help by saving labels from Campbell's Soup products, any size Pepperidge Farm crackers and V8 Splash.
Just peel off the labels, complete with UPC code, and send them to school with your child. Glen Dhu volunteers will package them up and, when we have enough to redeem them for great products, we'll cash them in.

Labels can be redeemed for a variety of items including:

  • Audio/Visual Equipment

  • Books

  • Computer Equipment

  • Sports Equipment

  • Musical Instruments

  • Educational Manipulatives

  • Videocassettes

  • CD-ROMs

  • Electronic Equipment

Further information on the program can be obtained from Campbell's Soup
